The Alcatel-Lucent 9740 WiMAX Access Controller (WAC) is the subscribers' connectivity and management node for fixed, nomadic and mobile wireless access. The 9740 WAC corresponds to the Access Services Network Gateway (ASN-GW) node of the WiMAX Forum.
The 9740 WAC has several main functions. It provides authentication, authorization and accounting to users. It enforces Service Level Agreements (SLAs) according to the users' profiles (customer such as Gold, Silver, Bronze classes). This is performed via Call Admission Control, Service Flow creation and Flow Policing. The 9740 WAC efficiently manages resources through dynamic connection establishment and release for value-added services. It's function is also to allocate IP addresses and provide connectivity. Further, it provides mobility support meaning inter-cell mobility, location update and paging of terminals in Idle Mode.
The Alcatel-Lucent 9740 WAC cluster supports very high capacity and scalability up to 10 Gbps of subscriber traffic, and up to 600,000 subscribers, with a high level of reliability and better than "five nines" availability.
